About Nuskin Enterprises

What causes teeth discoloration?

If you are shopping for a teeth whitening toothpaste it is important to have realistic expectations about the kind of results that you can typically expect from an over-the-counter toothpaste. In order to appreciate the limitations of whitening toothpaste, it is also helpful to understand what causes teeth discoloration and what options are available to lighten and brighten your smile. There are a number of natural, environmental and lifestyle reasons why teeth become discolored or stained –

  1. Eating habits – Eating and drinking highly pigmented foods regularly is one of the major causes of teeth discoloration.
  2. Aging – Just in the same way that our hair, skin and general appearance changes as we get older, so does our teeth. It is common for teeth to become more yellow as we get older.
  3. Poor oral hygiene – Ineffective oral hygiene can result in a build up of soft deposits which can darken the appearance of the teeth.
  4. Smoking – Regularly inhaling cigarette smoke is one of the fastest ways to discolor teeth. Initially, nicotine will only stain the outer surface, but over time the discoloration will spread to the internal matrix of the teeth.
  5. Medication – Some medications such as antibiotics can cause long lasting staining of the teeth.
  6. Genetics – Not everybody is born with white teeth. It is completely natural for some peoples teeth to be more yellow than others.

Will AP24 work for me?

Whitening teeth can be a very complicated business and what works for one person will not necessarily work for someone else. Teeth can be discolored for many different reasons and it is important to realize that there are very real limitations as to what can be achieved with certain whitening products. The type of discoloration dictates whether a product like AP-24 Whitening Fluoride toothpaste will have any positive effects. Teeth stains are classified as either intrinsic or extrinsic discoloration. The difference between to two conditions is as follows –

Extrinsic – This is discoloration that occurs on the surface of the teeth. Examples of extrinsic stain causes –

    • The buildup of plaque and tartar. Poor oral hygiene can leave the teeth discolored.
    • Beverages like coffee, tea, red wine.
    • Foods like curry, pasta sauces and fried foods, Highly pigmented foods like beetroot, blueberries, and strawberries. Foods with colorings.
    • Antibiotics.
    • Smoking cigarettes or cigars will stain teeth.

Intrinsic – This is discoloration that is embedded in the tooth structure. Examples of intrinsic stain causes –

  • Aging; as we get older it is common for our teeth to become discolored. This can be caused by changes in the tooth structure like the thickness of the enamel and dentin layers.
  • Fluorosis; over exposure to fluoride while the teeth are forming can cause staining on the teeth.
  • Antibiotics like tetracycline can result in varying degrees of teeth discoloration.
  • Smoking cigarettes or cigars for an extended period of time will eventually result in intrinsic as well as extrinsic stains.
  • Illness; some diseases can cause teeth discoloration.

To evaluate whether a whitening toothpaste like AP24 is the right for you, it is worthwhile considering the following points –

  • Do you have teeth discoloration or stained teeth? If so what do you think has caused it?
  • Is your aim to visibly lighten your teeth by one or more shades?
  • Do you regularly consume food and beverages that are likely to stain your teeth?
  • If you are a smoker, are you looking for a toothpaste that can control the amount of nicotine staining?
  • Are you confident that your oral care routine is sufficiently effective to keep your teeth and gums healthy?
  • Are you prone to canker sores? Do you have sensitive skin that is easily irritated by certain soap or detergents?
  • Is product price a major consideration?
  • Have you had any teeth restoration work done?

Let’s consider each point individually –

Vita Classical Teeth Shade Guide

Do you have teeth discoloration or stained teeth? If so what do you think has caused it? (You may need to consult your dentist to help you fully answer this question).

If you were born with teeth that are more yellowish than white, then AP24 toothpaste will not change your current tooth color. In fact, there is no over-the-counter whitening toothpaste that will noticeably change the natural color of your teeth. The active ingredient in professional teeth whitening procedures is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Since AP24 whitening toothpaste does not contain any form of peroxide it doesn’t have the ability to whiten the teeth beyond their natural color. Even kinds of toothpaste that do contain peroxide are still usually poor at bleaching teeth, applying a bleaching agent like peroxide to the teeth via a toothpaste is a very ineffective way to whiten teeth. If you would like to lighten the color of your teeth, there are plenty of effective options available –

  • Professional in-office whitening – This is the most powerful and fastest way to lighten the color of your teeth by multiple shades. This process is performed in the dentist’s chair with the highest concentrations of peroxide.
  • Professional at-home whitening – A cost effective, convenient and safe way to whiten teeth with professional strength peroxide from the comfort of your own home. This process is done along with the guidance and consultation of a dentist.
  • Over-the-counter whitening strips – A gentle way to whiten teeth that does not require a dentist’s supervision. This whitening method uses adhesive barrier strips that contain a thin layer of peroxide that is held in contact with the teeth for anything between 5 minutes to 2 hours depending on brand.

If your aim to lighten your teeth by one or more shades, then AP-24 whitening toothpaste will not be a good choice for you. The ingredients contained in the toothpaste are not designed to whiten teeth by that measure. To whiten teeth by multiple shades you would need to use a method that utilizes a peroxide bleaching agent like professional office/home whitening or over-the-counter whitening strips.

If you regularly consume food and beverages that are likely to stain your teeth then AP24 would be a good option for you. By using mild abrasives to gently scrub away extrinsic stains, AP24 can potentially return your teeth to their original color. The other advantage of this toothpaste is that the patented AP24 formula is designed to make it more difficult for food particles to stick to the teeth making staining less likely.

If you are a smoker and are looking for a toothpaste that can control the amount of nicotine staining, then AP24 Whitening toothpaste could be a good choice for you. The combination of the abrasive cleaning action and the preventative properties of the AP24 formula means nicotine stains could be removed and then prevented from reattaching to the enamel surface. There are limitations, however, smoking stains can eventually become intrinsically embedded inside the teeth where they can not be removed by an abrasive cleaning action. If that is the case, then another option such as professional whitening or whitening strips would be required.

If you are confident that your oral care routine is sufficiently effective to keep your teeth and gums healthy, then AP-24 might not be a good buy for you. If you brush twice daily, floss regularly, eat a healthy diet and consistently get the thumbs up from your dentist at your scheduled checkups then spending the extra money on a toothpaste like this may not be worth it.

Are you prone to canker sores? If you are, then AP-24 may not be a good choice. This toothpaste contains Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which is a known irritant that can increase the chances of succumbing to canker sores. The skin inside the mouth is especially delicate and for some people, Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is too harsh of a detergent to use on a regular basis. If that is the case, it might be better to look for an SLS free toothpaste.

Is product price a consideration for you? AP24 products are expensive compared to other kinds of toothpaste. The main selling point of this toothpaste is the patented AP24 formula that bonds dimethicone and surfactant ingredients together to protect the teeth against the build up of plaque and staining. If you are happy with the color and condition of your teeth and would like to keep them that way, then maybe AP24 toothpaste would be a good investment long term. However, if you feel that the price tag is too steep, then there are certainly other toothpastes and whitening options that might be more suitable and cost effective for you.

Have you had any teeth restoration work done? If you have veneers, crowns or partial dentures, these will not be affected by any form of teeth whitening. An abrasive toothpaste like AP24 will keep them nice and clean but they will not make them any whiter. Even professional whitening with the strongest concentrations of peroxide will not change the color of restorations. This is something you need to be mindful of if you are serious about whitening your teeth, if you make your teeth whiter, you will need to have any restorations replaced so they match the new color of your teeth.

AP24 Whitening Fluoride Toothpaste Review.

Surveys show that 40% of the population is concerned about the color of their teeth and would like a whiter smile. But, with professional teeth whitening sessions being expensive, many people opt for a tooth whitening toothpaste as a cheaper alternative. While whitening kinds of toothpaste are far less expensive than professional treatments they still retail at a premium price, sometimes costing up to 10 times more than a normal toothpaste. The AP-24 toothpaste from Nuskin is a premium designer style toothpaste that has become a popular choice for people wanting whiter teeth. It retails at about £11 in the UK and $10 in the US making it considerably more expensive than your average toothpaste.

There is much debate regarding the effectiveness of whitening toothpaste with experts claiming that they will not noticeably change the color of your teeth at all. With that in mind, we put AP-24 to the test to see if it lives up to the hype and the price tag.

Stephanie AP24 review

Review

So this is my review of the Nuskin AP-24 fluoride whitening toothpaste. I used it for about a month, although I haven’t used it for about 2 or 3 weeks now. it has a really good flavour, that’s the first thing you notice, it’s very pleasant to use. It does make your teeth feel a lot cleaner and it does give your teeth kind of a shine which I find really nice.

When you are actually using the product you don’t really notice the shade difference of your teeth, you notice they look different because they are shiny and they look clean but you don’t notice that they look whiter. but, the one thing I have noticed is since I have stopped using it for the last 2 or 3 weeks, my teeth look considerably worse. So, although you don’t notice it while you are using it, it is something that you notice, it did improve the look of my teeth whilst I was using it, but I only noticed later on.

Verdict

It is quite considerably more expensive than a regular toothpaste. As far as whitening kinds of toothpaste go, this has been the most successful, it’s certainly the nicest flavor, it’s certainly the most pleasant to use out of all the toothpaste I have tried. But I don’t know whether that means the price is justified. Because of that, I don’t think I would personally buy it myself, spending that kind of money on toothpaste is not what I do. I’m sure a lot other people would and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it giving it a go, I’m sure it would work on your teeth, it will give your teeth a nice shiny look. It will make them whiter and the longer you use it the better results you are going to get from it. So, that’s my review, give it a go and see what you think.

Shauna AP24 review

Review

Hi guys, this is my review of the AP24 whitening fluoride toothpaste from Nuskin. Firstly, it comes in a nice, classy looking flip top tube that sits perfectly on the bathroom counter which I like. It has a lovely, vanilla mint flavour that feels mild and gentle on my teeth and gums. This toothpaste does feel quite different from other toothpaste in that it leaves a protective coating on your teeth to prevent, both the build-up of plaque and teeth staining from coffee and red wine. After brushing with this toothpaste my teeth definitely do feel extra smooth and glossy.

Verdict

As far whitening goes, even after a month of use, I really haven’t noticed a significant difference in the whiteness of my teeth. I do think this toothpaste would be a great choice for removing stains and keeping your teeth looking their best, but If you are looking to transform your teeth into an ultra bright Hollywood smile then this toothpaste probably won’t do the trick.

Anna AP24 review

Review

Hi there, my name is Anna and for just over a week now I have been trying out this toothpaste here called AP-24 whitening fluoride toothpaste. So, to start with, I really like how the product looks, it looks high end and classy and I would be more than happy to  have it on my bathroom shelf. In terms of flavour, it is minty and fresh, just what I would expect from a toothpaste. so it is very pleasant to use. Now, obviously, the big selling point of this toothpaste is that it is meant to be whitening.

Verdict

Unfortunately, I haven’t really seen a significant difference in the color of my teeth, although, I’m hopeful if I carry on using it I will. This toothpaste is quite expensive, it is a bit pricier than normal kinds of toothpaste you would buy from the supermarket. And because I haven’t really seen any difference in my teeth, I’m not really sure I would spend the extra money, so I probably wouldn’t buy it myself. I think, if I do start to see a difference in my teeth, I would consider it and I would recommend it to a friend, but only if it does what it says which is whiten my teeth.

Aimee AP24 review

Review

Hi, guys, my name is Aimee and I’m here to do a review for the AP-24 whitening fluoride toothpaste. When I get a new toothpaste, there are a few things I like to do. I like to get a nice mild one that doesn’t burn my mouth, a lot of kinds of toothpaste do that, a lot of big brands do that, but what I liked about this toothpaste was that it gave me a really good clean in the morning but it didn’t burn my mouth, so that is a plus. I’ve been using it for about 5 or 6 days now and I can really notice my teeth are getting whiter and whiter, very slightly, every day or so. I am a smoker, so my teeth are not the whitest, to begin with so there is good whitening power from this toothpaste.

Verdict

It is around £9, so it is a bit more than most people would pay for a toothpaste, most people would spend about £2.99 in most stores for a good whitening toothpaste, this one is more expensive but you are getting a higher quality product. I have gotten results quicker with this and it doesn’t burn my mouth which is the top thing about this toothpaste. Also, I would definitely recommend it to all my friends because I had a good experience with it, it just is a really good product. At the end of the day, for £9 I was expecting a lot from it and it did deliver.  So the AP-24, I loved it, I would recommend it, I would recommend to a friend and I would buy again.

  1. Does it take stains out of capped teeth?

    Reply
    • Hi Kay,
AP-24 toothpaste won’t have much effect on capped teeth. Porcelain dental caps should be very stain resistant anyway. But, if you are concerned about the appearance of your capped teeth, it might be an idea to ask your dentist’s opinion at your next check up.

      • ANY toothpaste will CLEAN crowned (capped) teeth. You cannot change the color of a crown.

  2. This toothpaste is selling for $20 on fb. That’s crazy! Reading the reviews… its not whitening their teeth.

    • I actually paid $20 on facebook from a friend and it worked really well. It must depend on who uses it and if they follow the dry brush directions or not. My friend made sure I took a before pic, and then a one week picture. I didn’t even think my teeth were that yellow until I saw my progress through photos. To me it was totally worth the money. I had been paying my dentist MUCH more than the cost of this toothpaste, and it obviously wasn’t working as effectively as I thought after seeing these results. Every person is different though.

      • What is the dry brushing directions you’re talking about?

        Reply
        • Dry brushing means you don’t use water at all while you brush. You put the toothpaste on a dry toothbrush and start brushing. The toothpaste mixes with your saliva instead of water and you get better results. It’s kind of weird the first couple of times you do it because most people are so accustomed to using water, but it really does get results with this whitening toothpaste.

    • I bought this tooth paste about a month ok. I took a pic the day I got it and one today. My teeth look more yellow now then they did before I bought it. Will not use anymore. I’ll go back to my crest whitening toothpaste.

  3. Nice flavor, packaging, but I paid $23 for mine (from a friend who charged for postage and sent a toothbrush with it) but I found it to not whiten any more than Crest or one that I like that has the exact ACTIVE INGREDIENTS as AP24 only MORE of them. It’s PLUS WHITE and you can get it at Walmart for $2.50! Way more Sodium monofluorophosphate and Flouride ion than this one by Nu Skin. Check it out. It’s stronger flavored and blue in color but same thing for 1/6 the price! No brainer which one I’ll buy again.

  4. Since I started using this toothpaste, my gums are really sore. I had to stop using it for a couple of days. Is this toothpaste safe on your gums and the enamel on your teeth?

    Reply
    • Hi Amy,
Yes, this toothpaste is safe to use on your teeth and gums. It doesn’t use peroxide which can often make teeth and gums sensitive and tender. Instead, it uses a combination of mild abrasives to remove stains that shouldn’t really cause any problems at all. If you try using the toothpaste again and the soreness returns, maybe you should consider a milder non- abrasive toothpaste instead. Also, sometimes, when using a whitening toothpaste it is tempting to give the teeth an extra hard brush to maximize the benefits. Brushing with too much force, especially with an abrasive toothpaste can cause wear on the tooth enamel and possibly cause sore gums.
Hope this helps and thanks for your comment.

  5. I am sure we have all seen the video of the dentist reviewing AP24 on FB.
He says that AP24 is VERY abrasive and will damage your teeth.
I do realize that there has to be some abrasiveness in order for it to remove the stains on your teeth, but how would the abrasiveness of AP24 compare to other whitening toothpastes?

    Reply
  6. Hi Jennifer,

A toothpaste abrasiveness is measured by its Relative Dentine Abrasivity (RDA) on a scale of 0-250.

    0 – 70 = Low abrasion
    70 – 100 = Medium abrasion
    100 – 150 = High abrasion
    150 – 250 = Extremely high abrasion
According to Nuskin, AP24 has a RDA of 70-80 which would be considered relatively mild compared to other whitening toothpaste like Colgate Whitening which has a RDA of 124.
AP24 would be comparable to toothpastes like Colgate Total and Sensodyne.
An example of a very harsh toothpaste would be Colgate Tartar Control at 165 RDA.
    Hope this helps.

    • I’ve seen several others on FB say it has an RDA of 103? So this information is coming from Nuskin directly. How can we believe that is the truth when we see conflicting numbers. Do you have a link I can go to and see the numbers? Also I feel like Nuskin is making a lot of money off of this product, so why don’t they just have it ADA approved and stop all of the non-sense?

There is an information page – http://www.nuskin.com/global/library/pdf/products/ap24_whitening_product_profile.pdf

We have also had this confirmed in person from Nuskin’s product support team – “The RDA is for the abrasive used in the toothpaste – Aluminum Oxide. The RDA value of our Toothpaste is between 70 and 80, which is considered very mild”.

        We hope this helps.

  10. I am a dental hygienist and this toothpaste has nothing in it that will whiten your teeth. It may remove surface stain, but it contains nothing that permanently whitens teeth. Crest white strips are a great alternative. The ingredients will whiten the teeth because it does contain peroxide. It gets directly into the tooth structure. You do have to touch them up periodically to keep the whiteness. They are reasonably priced. The price for this tube of toothpaste is outrageous!! You can get Whitestrips for this price with approximately 24-32 strips, a months worth.

  12. This paste is ok. I have used it for 3 weeks now and see a slight difference in before and after pics but only enough difference that it could be a change in the lighting.

After about 14 days I started getting sensitivity. Now almost at week 3 my teeth are so sensitive to cold that I can’t eat anything remotely chilled without agony. Green salad should not cause tooth pain!

I consulted my dentist about the increased sensitivity and this is the only thing I have changed and he advised me to stop using the product. I have never had sensitivity even with crest white strips or other over the counter brand whitening pastes.

The all natural claim on the ingredients is very misleading. I trusted the person who sold it to me and didn’t check into it until I saw my dentist. Look it up and be informed before you purchase.

    Hope this goes away soon!

  15. AP24, made me gum irritated and made the roots itchy (yes itchy and I can’t go under the gumline to scratch it). The color change is so small it’s not worth $20 IMO. When the person whom I purchased the toothpaste messaged me and asked about the difference I told her ” there is hardly a change.” I included photos and she did not say a word back. I have noticed on some photos on the before and after people using a filter on the photos.
And another HUGE let down, I’ve noticed my gums bleed with this toothpaste.
